Want to Build a Canoe Paddle With Us?

Custom-Built Canoe Paddle

...no space?
...no tools?
...no experience?

Come to our humble Atchison workshop.
Work alongside Steve
In one long weekend
build a once-in-a-lifetime experience AND a custom wooden canoe paddle of your own!

How it works:
  1. Come alone or bring a friend.
  2. Look at the dates of available workshops and select one that works best for you. Call or e-mail us to enroll.
  3. Arrive and stay in Atchison for the long weekend.
  4. Begin working on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m., meet Saturday and Sunday starting at 8:00 a.m. each day, and hope to finish by Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
  5. At the end of the workshop (if you've worked REAL hard), your paddle will be completed EXCEPT for the final varnishing phase, which you will complete at home.  (We will send you home with the simple instructions for completing the varnishing on your own.)
We Supply:
  • the paddle designs (contemporary, beaver tail, otter tail, voyageur)
  • building materials, tools, clamps, workshop space, & Steve's expertise
  • questionable coffee & jokes
  • sturdy, lightweight woods for you to laminate together for your paddle...
    alder
    ash
    basswood
    cedar
    cherry
    cyprus
    osage orange
    walnut
You Supply:
  • the enthusiasm, elbow grease, and a long weekend for working in the shop
  • the ability to stand for several hours at a time and focus on your work
  • the ability to work hard throughout the weekend
  • food and lodging
  • a bit of patience (you will be sharing equipment during certain parts of the workshop and need to be a wee bit patient with these moments)
  • the willingness to work with power tools such as band saws and sanders (we'll teach you how to use them)
  • the commitment to build memories with your classmates
  • some new, clean jokes (PLEASE!)
